Short Street is an old Sailortown street linking Pilot Street with Princes Dock Street. It is clearly recorded by 1843 and was probably given a simple descriptive name because of its short length, although the sources reviewed do not state this explicitly. Nineteenth-century directories show it as a mixed dockland street occupied by mariners, ship carpenters, labourers, publicans, spirit dealers, grocers and a ship agent, reflecting its close connection with Belfast harbour. It also contained a bonded warehouse associated first with James Ritchie and later with Ritchie & Robb, showing that the street formed part of the port’s customs and storage economy. During the twentieth century, residential use gradually gave way to industrial occupation, and the wider Sailortown clearances of the late 1960s and 1970s destroyed the old neighbourhood around it. The street itself survived, and new housing was built beside it as part of the Harbour View development between 2007 and 2009.
