Ratcliffe Street running from Donegall Pass to Posnett Street, the street was being developed by 1866, when the Northern Whig recorded a proposed house there for Miss Gamble. Early sources vary between the spellings Ratcliffe Street and Radcliffe Street. A formal Belfast Council resolution of 1 January 1869 used Radcliffe Street and recorded that it had not yet been sewered, drained, levelled, flagged or paved. The Council ordered that the street be cleared of obstructions and completed according to the borough surveyor’s specifications. Belfast directories continued to use Radcliffe Street until at least 1880, while Ratcliffe Street subsequently became the established form. James Radcliffe, a bricklayer, lived at No. 8 in 1868 and may have been associated with its development, although this has not been proved.
