Named in honour of Revd. Isaac Nelson (1809-88), Presbyterian minister, abolitionist and Irish nationalist politician. Nelson Memorial Church (now deconsecrated) adjoins Nelson Square, which was built earlier than Nelson Court.
There was another Nelson Court off Nelson Street in the Sailortown area in the 19th and early 20th century.
