Milford Street takes its name from the influence of John Alexander a wealthy landowner whose family seat was at Milford House in Co. Carlow where the family had founded the largest flour mill in Ireland. The family owned a lot of land in this area including Ardmoulin House adjacent to the flour mill in Percy Street Belfast. Carlow Street, Alexander Street West and Ardmoulin Avenue all can be traced back to the Alexander family. “St. Peter's Church. - Mr. Bernard Hughes, Baker and Flour Merchant, obtained a fee-farm grant from John Alexander, Esq., M.P, of Milford, County Carlow, of a plot of ground, at a high annual rent. It presents a frontage to four streets--extending along Milford Street 314 feet, along Dysart-street 138 feet, along Derby-street 138 feet, and along Alexander-street 197 feet”.
