Lockview Road had previously been called Lagan Vale or Laganvale Road.
It was named after a house called Lockview, roughly opposite the current site of Cutter's Wharf. This house, in turn, was named after the first lock on the Lagan. There is no longer a lock or weir at this site. The lowest weir on the Lagan is now situated several hundred metres upstream, just above Belfast Boat Club.
