Lavinia Mews and Lavinia Square, built in several phases in the 2000s and 2010s, stand on the site of the former Ormeau Cricket Ground. The name recalls Lavinia Street, which existed from 1869 to the early 1980s. It is possible that it refers to a character in the tale of the lovers Palemon and Lavinia, which forms part of the poem The Seasons by Scottish poet James Thomson (1730). Palemon is a wealthy landowner who falls in love with a humble, impoverished gleaner, Lavinia, who turns out to be the daughter of his own deceased friend.
