Named for Field Marshal, His Excellency, The Right Honourable Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, who was a senior British Army Officer, colonial administrator, and who won notoriety during imperial campaigns during the Boer War. He later became the Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of State for War at the beginning of the Great War before he lost his life when the ship he was aboard sank on June 5, 1916. Part of a small group of streets off Donegall Road which commemorate British colonial expeditions and rule in Egypt and Sudan, including Nubia Street, Meridi Street, Kitchener Street and Soudan Street.
