Hardinge Street / Hardinge Place (Belfast)

  • Hardinge Street: First listed in the Belfast and Province of Ulster Directory (1852). Absent from the 1843 directory, so named between 1843–1852. Mentioned in the Banner of Ulster, 4 Feb 1853.

  • Name origin: Almost certainly after Henry Hardinge (1785–1856), 1st Viscount Hardinge, Chief Secretary for Ireland (1830, 1834–35), created Viscount in 1846, later Governor-General of India and Commander-in-Chief of the Army.

  • Hardinge Court: Small court off Hardinge Street, listed from 1861.

  • Hardinge Place: Alternative name for the court, appearing in the 1890 directory, but by 1894 the entry reads “Hardinge Court (Hardinge Place in 1890).”
