In the scramble by European Powers for African territory towards the close of the l9th century, Major Marchand with seven French officers and eighty native troops hoisted the French flag on Fashoda. News of this reached Kitchener who went with an escort up the White Nile and informed Marchand that he could not hoist the French flag in the Khedive's dominions. The French were forced to retire and the Egyptian flag was hoisted over Fashoda. This action provoked a fierce outburst of political feeling in France — and gave ' this Beersbridge Road street its name. (Belfast Street Names. John J. Marshall). Fashoda Street and Marchand Street.
