Dunraven Avenue

Dunraven Avenue — avenue off Grace Avenue, Bloomfield. First recorded in the Belfast and Province of Ulster Directory (1900), when it was described as “off Grace Avenue, Bloomfield. Houses in course of erection.” In the preceding year's directory (1899) the street appears as Dunraven Street No. 1, off Upper Bloomfield Avenue, with no houses yet built. The name Dunraven was already in use elsewhere in Belfast, notably in Dunraven Street and Dunraven Court off the Shankill Road, suggesting that it was recognised locally as a name in its own right. It probably commemorates the title Earl of Dunraven, borne by the Quin family of Adare, County Limerick. Although the earldom belonged to the Irish peerage, the title itself was derived from Dunraven Castle in Glamorgan, Wales.
