Ballymoney / Englishtown

An Clochán Liath, known in English as Dungloe is a town in County Donegal. It is the largest in the Donegal Gaeltacht.  It is not unusual for Irish towns to have two unrelated names in Irish and English, but there is a very specific reason in this case.  Originally the town was known in English as Cloghanlea, which is a straightforward anglicisation of the An Clochán Liath.  The name Dungloe comes from Dún gCloiche, the site of a monthly fair on an island 8km to the NW.  In the late 18th century the fair was relocated to An Clochán Liath and the name of the fair came to be applied to the town.

Dual language street sign (English and Irish) approved in July 2024.
