Clarendon Avenue

The Belfast And Province Of Ulster Directory 1899 refers to Clarendon Avenue “off Upper Bloomfield Avenue houses in the course of erection”. This street may be named after George Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon (1759-1827) also known as “Great Lord Clarendon”, a prominent diplomat and Liberal politician. He was three times Foreign Secretary and served as Lord Privy Seal, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, President of the Board of Trade and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
