Bethany Street was being developed as a street in 1898 as indicated by this notice published on 22 September 1898 in the Belfast Telegraph: "BALLYHACKAMORE — New Houses to Let in Bethany Street; parlour and three bedrooms, close range, bay windows, and garden in front; rent, 5s 6d per week". A possible surmise is that the street’s name “Bethany” was inspired by a biblical place name. In the New Testament, Bethany was the name of a village near Jerusalem – known as the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus (whom Jesus raised from the dead).
