Amelia Street is a short side-street off Great Victoria Street. It was first recorded in 1856 in Henderson's Directory.
The street was probably named after Lady Amelia Chichester, a daughter of the First Marquess of Donegall, Arthur Chichester (1739-1799) and his first wife, Lady Anne Hamilton (d. 1780). Amelia was their seventh and last child and died in infancy (c. 1780). According to Patton the development of the railway system led to a number of hotels being built such as the Crown in Great Victoria Street and several boarding houses and “refreshment rooms” in Amelia Street.
